The road to the Naturalmania this year was a fun one. Team SUF was coming off a Big Win at the Hercules, and we were ready to follow up with the Naturalmania group. The Naturalmania 2014 team was a blend of familiar and new faces. I believe it was a great mix. The team also had plenty of helping hands at the show. WNBF Pro Kevin Terrier, Alicia Cusumano, James Schamallfuss, and future competitor Jeanette Hall were all there to provide help and support.
Charlee V WNBF Pro Lightweight– Charlie was coming off a solid Novice class victory at the 2014 INBF Hercules. We made the decision to bounce him into the Naturalmania and give him a crack at a pro card. In the time between the shows we were able to make alot of fine tuning to his diet and posing. These adjustments paid off as he captured a WNBF Pro Card at the show. His road to the card was a little more challenging and interesting than usual. The NM is a super pro qualifer which gives out pro cards to class winners, BUT there has to be 5 in a class. The lightweight class only had 4. Therefore in order to get that card, Charlie had to win the class, and then take top 3 in the overall. This is more difficult because he has to beat out 2 other people who already beat out thier entire respective classes. But Charlie brought his A game and was able to make it into that top 3 spot in order to capture the WNBF Pro card. I am very proud of this champion and all that he has been able to accomplish in a short period of time.
Nora Connolly– Nora has an energetic and contagious personality and is a great addition to the team. She is still very young and has already come so far with her physique. The naturlamania was her very 1st show and she did phenomnal. The double 2nd place finishes serve as a great foundation to build upon. There were some slight mistakes made in the lead up to the show and on show day, but we learned from those mistakes and will continue to improve. The day after the Naturlamaina she made the decision to bounce into the Fulton show October 11th in CT. She is ready and eager to correct some of the mistakes and bring an even more amazing package to the stage. Keep an eye on this one, she is a big part of the Team’s future.
Leo G – Last time took the stage was the 2012 INBF Long Island Experience. At this show he took first place in the Novice bodybuilding class. For this show we had a different approach. We wanted to focus on the physique classes. Leo’s personality and look gives the impression of a MR. Fitness. This class turned out to be a great fit. He took 1st place in the Masters Physique Class, and a solid 3rd in the Open Mens Physique Class. The two competitors that managed to edge him out had a better stage presence. There are some issues to fix in terms of presentation but the physique aspect of the equation was spot on. He looked like a true champion on stage and I was very proud of him. It is always hard to make the transition to a different category. Stage presence for bodybuilding compared to Physique is like night and day. This is the area that we will work hardest to improve. From a physique standpoint I felt like Leo brought the best looking package to date and achieved peak performance. Look for him to continue to make improvements both to his physique and his stage presence in order to make another run at the WNBF Pro card.
Leroy Hopkins – Leroy has an incredible physique and has the potential to go very far in the sport. He is a hard-worker with a very positive outlook and energy. He is without a doubt the ideal teammate. From a competitive ststandpoint he will still need to focus on having his lower body match the sheer power and force of his upper body. Once that symmetry is achieved I am confident Leroy is Pro material. There is undoubtedly alot of hard work still to be done, but I an confident in Leroy’s drive and ambition to achieve his goals.
Chris Jenkins – The Naturalmania was also the first show for Chris, but he handled himself as if he had done it numerous times before. His conditioning and stage presence was incredible. He ended up taking 4th in the open bantam weight class. This class was by far the hardest and most competitive one of the night. Chris proved himself to be a worthy competitor at the Naturalmania as he stood strong against some monstrous bantam weights. He is a very dedicated athlete and will be taking some time off in order to put on some more quality muscle. You can bet on Chris bringing an even better package to the stage in his next appearance. In the meantime he will continue to be a top notch guy and supporter of the team.
Vinny Cofield – Vinny is back !! He decided to bounce back after the Hercules and give the Naturalmania a run for its money. Vinny definitely makes showday interesting to say the least. For this show he tightened up a little bit more and really improved on his posing and endurance. He brought home some solid placings and even a victory in the Masters 50+ class. He also became the first Team SUF Athlete to compete in 3 classes in the same show. Which show will Vinny do next ? No one ever knows, but count on him coming back for more.
Michael Bouranis – Mike was another 1st time competitor. He was initially listed in the novice class, but due to the low turnout for that class the choice was made to go into the open. Mike has a very strong base and a great back. He poses well and handles himself with poise on the stage. For the future the focus would be on achieving better conditioning. He also weighs in at the bottom of the lightweight class. So the call would be to push the weight down slightly, achieve the conditioning and wreak hell in the bantam weight classes. Look for Mike to make solid improvements and we hope he will return to the stage soon.
Noelle Harrison – Noelle was yet another first time competitor. She also ran into a SUPER competitive Open Bikini Class. She made great progress on her prep for the show but had a few minor setbacks on the road. Next time around the nerves will be more at ease as she knows what to expect from the experience. Although the placing wasnt great, she is determined to improve. She will use this show as a learning experience and use it to bounce back and climb to the top.
